iBT Reading Quesiton: Category Chart (The 30 Second Rule) It’s the end of the reading passage and you’ve got to finish it with a category chart. You’ve got up to seven answer choices waiting for you to figure out which are not in either category and which fit into what category. This can be time consuming. You need to start with answer choice A, locate its key words in the text (watch for synonyms), and then match it to the category. Then you go to the next answer choice. What happens if the you’re not sure about the answer choice? Maybe it’s irrelevant or maybe it’s in one of the categories but you don’t see a connection in the text. This is why you should practice the thirty second rule. If you don’t connect within thirty seconds, then move on to the next one. Write down in your notes the number that you skipped. This way you can move faster and find the easier answer choices before going back to the more difficult ones.
