I could hear nothing but my own heavy breathing. I didn't sleep at all that night but when morning came I felt stronger. "I'm going to find out who's on the island, or burst,"I said to myself.
I took my gun and set out, making my way to the place where I had seen the camp fire . It wasn't long before I caught sight of a fire burning in a clearing among some tall trees. I crept towards it , holding my gun firmly , ready to shoot . A man was lying on the groud. I crept up to him, and the I saw that it was Miss Watson's Negro servant, Jim,Jim , my old friend ! Oh, how glad I was to see him!
"Hello, Jim !" I cried , and leapt out of the bushes . He sprang up and stared at me in horror. Then he dropped on to his knees and clasped his bands in prayer.
"Don't hurt me . Please , don't . I've never harmed a ghost in all my life. Go back to the river and don't harm old Jim who was always your friend."
"I'm not a ghost , Jim . I'm me , Huck , really me . Pinch me and you'll see that I'm really alive."
