"Get up, curse you!"
I opened my eyes and I looked round me. The sun was up and I had been fast asleep for hours. My father was standing over me, looking wild and sick.
"What do you think you're doing with my gun?" he asked.
"Somebody tried to get in and I was waiting for him," I lied.
"Why didn't you call me?"
"I did, but you didn't hear me. You wouldn't wake up."
"All right. Go out and see if there's any fish on the lines."
He unlocked the door and let me out.
When I came to the river, I found that the water had risen high and the swift current was carrying large branches along with it. Suddenly I caught sight of a canoe, a beauty, fourteen feet long. I dived in and caught it before it floated past. I hid it in the bushes. When I escaped I would Paddle far away in it so that my father could not catch me.
When my father came up to me, he found me hard at work, taking up a line.
