He'd heard about the money that Tom Sawyer and I had found in a cave some time ago. I had handed my share to Judge Thatcher for him to look after.It was a lot of money-six thousand dollars. The Judge was keeping it for me to help me in the future. My father wanted it to spend on drink.Every penny that I could get he used to spend on whisky.But I was determined not to let him waste my six thousand dollars.
I rushed to Judge Thatcher's.
"Why, my boy, you're all out of breath,"he said. "Have you come for your
interest?" "No, sir.I want to give it to you, and the six thousand dollars as well. Please take it, sir. Don't ask me anything-then I shan't have to tell any lies."
"Judge Thatcher looked very thoughtful for a while. Then he took a piece of paper and wrote something on it. He handed me the paper, saying,"That means that I have bought it from you. Sign your name here." I signed my name ,thanked the judge,and left.
That evening, when I went up to my room I found my father sitting there, waiting for me. He had climbed in through the open window.
