More women have come forward after police arrested a Greenwood man accused of trying to spread HIV to dozens in central Indiana.
Tony Perkins, 47, who was arrested Friday night, may have had unprotected sex with more than 100 women over the course of five years without disclosing that he has AIDS, police said.
Investigators said a very brave ex-girlfriend, known as Vickie, said Perkins' daughter warned her that he had the disease and had been trying to spread it since being diagnosed in 2004, even though he was told that he must disclose the disease to prospective sexual partners.
Police have already confirmed the identities of more than 10 of Perkins' alleged victims, 6News' Rick Hightower reported.
"Our primary concern right now is the public health threat that this may represent, so we're trying to get a hold of people who may not have caught the news over the weekend or who may not have heard about this," said Greenwoods police Det. Sgt. Doug Roller.
Vickie, who said she came forward despite threats from Perkins, told Hightower that she too has had women call her asking what they should do next.
"I've had victims call me this weekend that have called the detectives and are getting tested as we speak," she said. "If I came forward and lost my life with the threats, it was worth it to save other women from this monster."
Perkins was charged with two counts of failure of carriers of dangerous communicable diseases to warn persons at risk and intimidation, a D Felony punishable by three years in prison
Vickie said that even if Perkins is convicted, the sentence won't likely be as severe has he deserves.
"I've been asked by so many people, 'Why isn't this attempted murder, or attempted manslaughter?' and I would like that answer," she said. "I would like someone from the Legislature to answer that for me."
Johnson County Prosecutor Brad Cooper said the case could become a test for strengthening the penalties for such crimes.
This is only the second case tried in Johnson County since the law went into effect in 1998.
Perkins was held Monday at the Johnson County Jail on a $9,000 bond. He declined 6News' request for an interview
