FECT In My Eyes
“FECT in my eyes”, such a title is a little strange, isn’t it? FECT is an examination, an examination for financial Ehglish, so it must be the same to everyone who takes part in it. But such an examination, in my eyes, means a different thing from person to person. For some ones, such a certificate may increase their competitive ability in finding a job in banks in the future, for some ones, such a certificate perhaps means a promotion in their work, for some others, maybe they just want to learn more things from it. However, for myself, FECT is another totally different story which witnesses my change
Last year, I practised in a bank. The other day, an old foreigner came into our bank. He wanted to inquire something. The maneger asked me to receive him. The foreigner said so many things to me, but I just heard “check”, “remit” and other few words clearly. I was at a loss at that moment., I even didn’t know what he meant and what he wanted to do, how could I offer my help to him? The manager saw this and walked to us. The foreigner repeated what he said to me again to the manager. After listening to his request, the manager solved all the problem for him. After the foreigner left with satisfaction, the manager asked me where I want to work in the future. I told him that I want to find a job in a foreign-funded bank or a multi-national company after my graduation. He smiled and then said, “If your major English is so poor like this, I am sure you will not get a post in foreign banks, even if you can get one, you still can’t do a good job.” His words are so impressive to me that even today I still remember it clearly. The thing which happened that day really gave me a shock. From that day on, I doubted myself, I doubted my major kowledge and my English skills, I lost my confidence. “With such poor English, how can I find a job in foreign banks and how can I use English as a tool in my work in the future?” such a question, I asked myself again and again, but had no answer.
When I finished my practice in the bank, the new term was coming. I began my post-graduate study. I was worried about my poor major English all the days, but I still didn’t know how to improve my major English and how to gain my confidence again in learning English. Until one day, I saw some of my classmates reading the book of FECT. From their mouth, I knew that it’s the Financial English Certificate Test and such a book is written for that. When I first opened that book, I found with surprise that all the knowledge in that book is concerned with finance and all is written in English. I felt that it was a very good chance for me to learn major English and improve my English level. But I hesitated a little, I wondered whether I could pass that test for I had no confidence in improving my major English in only three months before the test. After some thinking, I told myself, even if there was only one percent of chance, I would still have a try. No matter whether I could pass it or not in the end, at least, I could learn so many useful things from that book, that was enough for me.
After I decided to take FECT, I began my preparation for it. At the beginning, I faced much difficulty. Because there were so many new terms of finance in that book, it was not an easy job for me to read it, sometimes, even one page would take me twenty minutes. Whenever I met the new terms, I consulted the dictionary, whenever I couldn’t undersand the meaning of the passage, I asked my classmates or my teachers. I really paid a lot of my effort and time in learning it, though it was difficult for me, I still stuck to my choice, because it indeed enlarged my major knowledge from reading and helped me improve my English level a lot. After I finished reading that book, there was only one month left, I began to do some examination papers. In the first two papers, I made so many mistakes in the listening part and the multiple choice. I knew my listening was poor, so I listened to the tape again and again until I heard everything in the tape clearly, I also listened to some business programs of BBC. I practised a lot everyday hoping that I could sharp my listening in this way. For the multiple choice, every time I made a mistake, I would read the relative chapter in the book until I caught on it and could choose the right answer. One month passed quickly. The time for me was so precious, everyday for me was so substantial. Although I felt busy and tired during those days, I considered it was really worthy, because through my sweat and effort, I could see my progress and I could find back my lost self-confidence again.
It was raining that day when I took the FECT. After the test is over, I don’t regret my choice even though I know there must be some mistakes in my paper and even though I don’t know whether I can get a satiafactory score or not. But all of this is not important now, the thing that matters is that I have really learnt a lot of useful things and already found a proper way to improve my major English now.
That is the FECT in my eyes. I have taken so many examinations in these years of study. FECT is just a so ordinary one of them, but it’s also a so special one from them. Because it witnesses my change, from a person who always doubts herself to someone who has self-confidence now. By taking FECT, I realize that as long as you try your best to do one thing, there will always be the reward for you, the most important thing is you can’t and you shouldn’t lose your confidence. FECT tells me where my confidence is, and also tells me where my future way is.
