Chinese shares fell 1.36 percent by midday Friday with oil majors and metals companies leading the fall due to weak commodity prices in the international market, dealers said.
The Shanghai Composite Index, which covers both A and B shares, was down 38.70 points at 2,814.85.
"The fall of large-caps and sharply shrinking turnover shows investors’ sentiment remains very weak and the market has no momentum to go upward in the near term," Huatai Securities analyst Zhou Lin told Dow Jones Newswires.
Investors were also worried that funds have been diverted to subscriptions for the initial public offerings of 10 companies that intend to list on the planned Nasdaq-style ChiNext board, traders said.
The Shanghai A-share index fell 40.70 points, or 1.36 percent, to 2,953.79, while the Shenzhen A-share index lost 12.45 points, or 1.21 percent, to 1,020.05.
