China on top of beauty world
IT HAS taken five years of strutting and posing and an annual fee believed to be worth $A4.6 million, but China achieved another of its global ambitions at the weekend when a 23-year-old Beijing secretary was crowned Miss World.
Zhang Zi Lin, who at 182 centimetres was the tallest of 106 contestants, was chosen as the first Chinese winner, and the 57th Miss World.
Her victory vindicated China's decision to lift its ban on beauty contests, and pay the organisers of the competition to be allowed to host it for four of the past five years.
Fireworks exploded over Sanya, a beach resort on Hainan Island, off the south coast, as news of Zhang's win emerged. Before her victory, the atmosphere inside the purpose-built Beauty Crown theatre had been subdued. The audience of about 2000, including many families, had paid the equivalent of $116 a seat, a ticket price that put the event far out of reach of ordinary Chinese. There was a heavy police presence
