China’s first lunar orbiter has made a successful lift off from its launch site in the southwest of the country. It due to enter the moon’s orbit in about a week’s time and should bring back pictures of the planet surface by the end of November. Daniel Griffith reports from Beijing.

“Amid the thundering roar of its rockets China’s first lunar orbiter lifted off marking the latest stage in the nation’s ambitious space program. The orbiter named Chang’e after a Chinese Goddess is expected to spend a year analyzing the moon surface. China’s then hoping to land a lunar robot in the next five years, with a long term goal a Chinese astronaut on the moon by 2020. For China, its space program is all about boasting national pride and international prestige. The nation’s leaders are also hoping to develop China’s nascent commercial space industry. China’s made big strides since the 1950s when Chairman Mao complained that the country couldn’t even put a potato in space.”
