中学英语的书面表达和口语中， very的使用频率极高。其主要功能是加强程度，增强语义，增加句子的表达力，还能集中表达说话人的思想和意图。作为副词，常用来修饰形容词，副词和一些分词，也可用在一些特定的句型结构中，表示特殊的含义，除此之外，very 还可用作形容词，与一些特定的词连用。下面一起商讨very 的用法。
一．very可修饰副词，不能直接修饰动词，修饰动词要用much ,very much ,very well.
误:Little Tom can very sing .
正 : Little Tom can sing very well .
误: I don’t very like that way of teaching .
正：I don’t much like that way of teaching .
误: She very likes fruit .
正 :She likes fruit very much .
二. very可修饰一些作定语，宾语补足语,及表语的形容词。如:
He is a very good cook .他是个好厨师。
The dish is very delicious .这道菜十分可口。
He was late for class,which made the teacher very angry .
他又迟到了，这使得老师很生气。
但要注意:
1.very不能修以a-开头的表语形容词alike,awake,afraid,alone,asleep等，这些词要用其他合适的词来修饰。如：
误：The two sisters look very alike.
正：The two sisters look very much alike.（这姊妹俩长得很像。）
误：He is very alone .
正：He is quite alone .(他很孤独。)
误：She is very asleep.
正：She is fast /sound asleep .(她在酣睡。)
2．very不能用来修饰worth,worthwhile,ready.
误：The film is very worth seeing.
正：The film is well worth seeing.这部电影很值得看。
误：She is very ready to find fault.
正：She is too ready to find fault .她很会吹毛求疵。
正：I’m always ready to help you .我随时都可以帮助你
3．very不能修饰right,perfect ，possible ,certain 及 表示“身体状况好的”fine .
误：What you said is very right .
正：What you said is quite/perfectly right .
误：I’m very fine.
正：I’m very well.
4．在一些句型中，形容词前不用very, 而用too.如：
One is never too old to learn .活到老，学到老。
The child is too young to go to school .这孩子还没到上学年龄。
He is too careful not to have noticed it . 他那么细心，不会不注意到这一点。
三．Very 可以修饰表心理状态的形容词化的过去分词，但被动语态的过去分词则要用much,very much 来修饰。
I’m very ( much) disappointed /pleased at the news .我对这个消息感到非常失望/高兴。
I’m very (much) excited to hear from you .收到你的来信我很激动。
Are you tired ?---No,not very ( tired).
English is (very) much used in many counties.英语在很多国家被广泛使用。
Our life has been (very) much improved since liberration .解放以来，我们的生活有了很大的改善。
